Former NFL wide receiver and motivational speaker Trent Shelton appears in Midtown for one night to talk his latest book, Protect Your Peace, as well as ways to take steps toward a better, more fulfilling life. $50 and up. 7pm.
Pastures Of The Empty Page: Fellow Writers On The Life & Legacy Of Larry McMurtry at Brazos Bookstore | Friday, January 12 | FREE
Editor George Getschow talks about compiling the stories in this volume, which celebrates the life and writing of Pulitzer Prize–winning author and Texas native, Larry McMurtry. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the event. 6:30pm.
Kindred Stories presents Oludara Adeeyo at Holy Family HTX Episcopal Church | Friday, January 12
The author talks about her new book, Mind, Body & Soul, which celebrates what makes Black women powerful, brilliant, and brave. $25; includes a copy of the book. 7pm.
Nishita Parekh at Murder by the Book | Tuesday, January 16 | FREE
The newcomer novelist discusses her debut, The Night of the Storm, which takes place in Sugar Land on the night Hurricane Harvey hit. She’s in conversation with Crime by the Book’s Abby Endler and novelist Ashley Winstead. Free to attend; though books for signing must be purchased from the store. 6:30pm.
The Black Family’s Guide to College Admissions at the Village School | Wednesday, January 17 | FREE
Come out to West Houston and mark the publication of the second edition of this valuable resource, which unlocks important considerations about the college admission process. You’ll meet other families, get answers to questions, and learn more about this often stressful process from authors Timothy Fields and Shereem Herndon-Brown. 6pm to 8pm.
Silent Book Club at Village Books | Sunday, January 21 | FREE
The Woodlands book store hosts this after-hours event for readers. Bring your current book and sit and read quietly with fellow book lovers. Afterward, you can share—or not—what has you intrigued. Guests will also have an opportunity to shop following the conclusion of the event. 5pm.
Writespace Open Mic & Reading Night at Antidote Coffee | Friday, January 26

Crystal Allen at Blue Willow Bookshop | Saturday, January 27 | FREE
The Texas author signs and discusses her latest novel, Between Two Brothers. Inspired by actual events, it’s a story of forgiveness and the power of a family’s unconditional love. Inprint Houston presents Kaveh Akbar & Ben Fountain at Alley Theatre | Monday, January 29
The 2023-24 Margarett Root Brown Reading Series continues as authors Kaveh Akbar and Ben Fountain will read from their new novels, Martyr! and Devil Makes Three, followed by an on-stage conversation with writer and professor at the University of Houston Creative Writing Program, Brenda Peynado. $5. 7:30pm.
