Areal estate expert has revealed a surprising hack for potential homebuyers—detailing why anyone looking for a new property should tour said house with one very specific accessory: a clothes hanger.
Tamany Hall is a real estate-focused social media influencer, who recently posted a video to her Instagram account in which she laid bare how her cheap and easy trick can help you to avoid any unpleasant surprises after you have bought (or rented) a new abode.
In the clip, she demonstrates how taking a hanger with you on a home tour will help you to ensure that the closets in the property have been properly installed, and haven’t been altered to make the space appear larger than it is.
Hall carries a hanger into what appears to be a very sizable walk-in closet, but when she attempts to hang it on the built-in clothing rail, she quickly realizes that the pole has been installed so close to the wall that a standard-size hanger won’t actually fit.
The video—which was posted in a bid to encourage Realtors® to keep a clothing hanger on hand at all times—amassed more than 4 million views and dozens of comments from followers left stunned by the simple trick.

“I would be so livid if I bought a house with closets like this not knowing ahead of time…” one person commented, while another added: “I lived in an apartment where hangers didn’t fit in the closet and that was the worst year.”
Home hacking at its finest
Speaking to Realtor.com® about her viral video, Hall explained that the idea came about after she was searching for her own property and nearly put in an offer when she realized something was amiss with the built-in storage.
“I was in the market for a home, and we were going to put an offer in on a cute older home that had been redone,” she recalls. “We were standing in the home, and I was hesitant because of the storage space.
“I asked the Realtor if he thought a hanger could fit in the closet, and he said he actually had one in the car. It didn’t fit, so that was the deciding factor. It was a super last-minute idea to film it, and the video went viral.”
Hall believes it’s important for buyers to be as prepared as possible before they tour a home. And many Realtors seem to agree, chiming in on her video with suggestions of their own about what items savvy agents should always have handy during a viewing.
“When the video went up, Realtors commented about seeing homes where an average-size dinner plate couldn’t fit inside cabinets,” Hall says. “Another had a marble to check for sloped floors.
“I really think one of the most important things is finding a Realtor who is proactive. Every market is different. I couldn’t necessarily afford a new home. Having a Realtor who is familiar with issues like mold and knows the ins and outs of the market is very important.”

Old homes vs. new construction
For new construction, Hall believes buyers are less likely to encounter issues.
“Hopefully, they wouldn’t have as many issues as an older home,” says the Dallas resident, who hopes to buy her first home next year. “With older homes, you have to be a bit more proactive.
“If you know a house was built by a smaller builder, keep an eye out as they might skip things to cut costs. In theory, it should really say in the listing description what went on in the house.”
Slow and steady wins the real estate race
Hall was very appreciative of her real estate agent’s inside knowledge and expertise.
“My Realtor was fantastic,” Hall notes. “I’m a first-time homebuyer, not a licensed Realtor. He told me what to look for. I think buyers should go into it with their absolute dealbreakers and must-haves.
“If the market gets more competitive, the houses are going to go fast with multiple offers. I probably would have missed that detail if I was under more pressure. The Realtor is your steady person who is there to offer an unbiased opinion.”
Keep calm and carry on
Hall says the purchasing process can be a stressful time for potential homebuyers.
“The buyer is going to be emotional, and it can be overwhelming,” she says. “If you look at a lot, after time, the homes start meshing. Location is really important, but I think the most important thing is to really lean on your Realtor, especially if you are a first-time homebuyer. Find a Realtor who has expertise to guide you, and think about if you and your lifestyle could live in this space.”

“It may not be the perfect home that you are getting into, but it will be the stepping stone to getting your dream home,” she says.
