Homeowners across the country are vowing to participate in "No-Buy July" this year—a monthlong commitment to pause discretionary spending.

For some, this can feel limiting, especially when there’s a desire to refresh or improve their space. But the good news is that a better-feeling home doesn’t have to cost lots of money.

No-Buy July isn’t about doing nothing—it’s about doing smarter, creative, free things to reenergize your home and tackle long-postponed tasks.

Free ways to spruce up your home during No-Buy July

Below are nine no-spend home improvement ideas to refresh your space. Each task is simple, satisfying, and—best of all—completely free.

1. Deep clean a forgotten or neglected area

Never underestimate the power of a good clean. You’d be surprised just how polished your house would look, if you gave areas like the pantry, basement, garage, or linen closet a total refresh.

The best way to get started? Donate, toss, or repurpose items.

"Keep only what you use," advises professional organizer Blanka Molnar. "Be ruthless with your items."

As you declutter, try not to get overwhelmed.

"Focus on one room or space at a time so you do not get overwhelmed," says Molnar.

2. DIY maintenance check

While not everyone is handy, these projects will not only give your home a refresh, but also keep you safe!

For example, cleaning the gutters can help prevent water damage. Replacing air filters and cleaning vent covers can prevent fires. And speaking of which, when was the last time you tested the smoke alarm?

It's zero monetary cost, but priceless when it comes to the upkeep of your home.

3. Rearrange your furniture

It’s not just about cleaning. Sometimes, a refresh to your living room or bedroom can be achieved simply by changing the layout.

"Move furniture around," suggests Molnar. "Get rid of the stagnant energy. Use unused corners for a long vase, signature decor pieces, favorite photos, or a corner bookshelf."

4. Use up what you already have

We’re all guilty of it—garages and closets housing old DIY items that have been held onto “just in case.”

So, use leftover paint for accent walls or touch-ups, cobble together scrap wood for shelf brackets, or bust out any old tiles for replacements or even small crafts.

5. Energy audit challenge

Here’s an idea that will actually put money in your pocket.

If your energy bill is looking high, it’s time to take stock of the many ways you might be unintentionally wasting electricity.

Unplug vampire electronics, check door drafts, close unused vents, and improve insulation with materials on hand to save money in the long run.

6. Organize paperwork and files

Welcome to the digital age, where most of your documents would be better protected if they were digitized.

But first, identify those important documents, clear out the junk drawer, and label files. But be careful with this project. There is a downside.

"Decluttering paperwork can be very draining, especially mentally," says Molnar. "Schedule a shorter period of time for each session, as decision fatigue can kick in quickly."

7. Repurpose home decor

After you’ve moved furniture around, take a look at the fixtures next.

Move art between rooms, use trays or baskets in new ways, and switch pillow covers or blankets between spaces.

One change of color might be the difference between drab and fab.

8. Tidy up the front door area

When you come home, this is the first area of your house you interact with. If it seems cluttered or run-down, it could put you in a mood that you’ll then carry with you throughout the house.

Show your front door some love, inside and out. Sweep, prune overgrowth, wash the door, and add personality with items you already have, such as welcome mats or unused planters.

9. Refresh grout, caulk, or fixtures

If supplies are already on hand, regrout tile, touch up caulk, or polish fixtures to look like new. If you don’t have supplies, this might be the one area worth putting some money down for. Touching up grout and caulk not only makes fixtures look nicer, but it also combats mold.

Treat these as weekend challenges or daily wins—and take before-and-after photos to increase motivation and boost satisfaction.

Why no-buy challenges help you see your home differently

Stepping away from spending forces you to use creativity and resourcefulness. This can lead to better financial habits and more appreciation for what you already own.

"As any homeowner knows, once you start repairs and revamps, the costs can add up before you know it," says Erica Sandberg, consumer finance expert at CardRates.com.

"No-Buy July is the perfect opportunity to adjust the way you think about the process, change your approach, and make more thoughtful choices. It gives homeowners an opportunity to get creative with home improvements, and save some money while they're at it."
