When your space is small, the decor details matter even more. And one of the hardest small spaces to decorate, while still maintaining a modicum of functionality? The kitchen.

Fortunately, small kitchens (especially for renters) tend to be the norm these days and no longer mean you’re forced into a fluorescently lit, white-tiled look of years gone by.

This week, we gathered up some of our favorite trending small-kitchen looks you can use to give your space a sweet and cozy glow this season—without doing any major renovations.

Here are five charming kitchen details from Instagram to try in your tiny space right now.

1. Midcentury modern pendants

Regardless of whether your kitchen appliances are perfectly hidden behind wood cabinetry, it’s still possible to get this midcentury modern look—especially if you snag a few of these pendants featured by @lunarne.studio.

“The bold, broad shape of the lights is wonderfully offset by the slim lines of the hanging rod, creating an interesting blend of shapes and lines that really draws the eye and seamlessly harmonize the room’s bold lines,” says lead designer and architect Anna Tatsioni, of Decorilla.

2. Swing-arm wall light

Another simple but effective lighting look that works extremely well in small kitchen spaces? This swing-arm wall light from @igorjosif. Bonus points for the fact that it can be swung against the wall and stored when not in use.

“It’s so important to focus on how the space will be used and feel, not just how it looks,” says Tatsioni. “That’s why I love this light—it can be moved out of the way or used for everything, from having guests over for dinner to catching up on late-night reading.”

Get the look: Get a fixture that does it all this season with this Coco Articulating Sconce.

3. Gingerbread cabinet detailing

A less functional, but no less attractive, small-kitchen addition we love right now is this gingerbread detailing on the cabinets of @av.home.

“Cabinet gingerbread detail can be seen in smaller spaces to add a pop of personality or design styles that are eclectic or cottage-inspired, especially when paired with crisp whites or bright colors,” says Teri Simone, head of design at Nieu Cabinet Doors. “This isn’t a trim style sold by most cabinet makers, so you’ll want to DIY it.”

Get the look: You can cut out a scallop detail from a trim board, or cut half circles and attach them individually to the bottom of your cabinets to add gingerbread detailing.

4. Metal-grate cabinets

For a unique cabinetry look that’s a little more diverse, but but just as striking, we love these trending metal-grate cabinets featured by @heidicaillierdesign.

“This look is hot right now,” says Simone. “Not only is it practical for keeping items like potatoes and onions ventilated, but it also works well with upper cabinets that aren’t quite tidy enough for glass but need a textured look.”

Get the look: Simone recommends ordering glass-ready doors with an open-center space, then filling them with your desired texture, whether that be metal mesh, caning, or even wicker to achieve this style.

5. Porcelain kettle

It’s important that every piece pulls its weight in both design and function when decorating a small kitchen, which is why we love this porcelain kettle from @our_house_is_home.

“One thing I love about porcelain kettles is that they’re so low maintenance yet look and feel so luxurious,” says Tatsioni. “They’re also super versatile and can fit pretty much anyone’s style, even if you’re more into an industrial kind of kitchen as opposed to a cottage core one.”

Get the look: Adorn your small space with a low-maintenance style icon like this kettle from KitchenAid.
