There are several ways to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the Houston area throughout the holiday weekend, including community service, brunches, parades and musical tributes. See what is happening in your neighborhood. This list is not comprehensive and details are subject to change.

MLK Day of Service

Attendees will honor Dr. King's life and teachings by participating in this community service day cleaning up Emancipation Park. Volunteers can pick up trash, weed, mulch and plant in one- or two-hour shifts.

Martin Luther King Jr. & Gandhi Musical Tribute

The Community Music Center of Houston hosts an evening of musical and dance performances at St. Mary of the Purification Catholic Church to pay tribute to Dr. King’s and Mahatma Gandhi’s legacies. The organization collabortates with Silambam Indian Dance Arts Organization to showcase “how art transcends boundaries, connects us to history and inspires action.”

MLK Program and Vigil

This annual event at Rice University is sponsored by the Rice Black Men’s Association and Multicultural Community Relations in Rice’s Office of Public Affairs. This year’s theme is “Leadership, Resilience—Moving Forward,” with presenters including organization president Reginald DesRoches, Doerr Institute for New Leaders director Bernie Banks and Sherwin Bryant, director of the Center for African and African American Studies.

The NAACP Missouri City and Vicinity Branch will host an “I Have A Dream” breakfast at the Knanaya Catholic Community Center in Missouri City. Traditional breakfast will be offered with pork sausage, turkey bacon, grits, eggs and fruit.

MLK drop off and pop-up

Grace Place, a nonprofit which provides a safe and welcoming environment for vulnerable homeless youth of all sexualities and gender identities, will have a pop-up shop for its new winter merchandise and the opportunity to drop off items to stock its boutique, Tracy’s Closet. The pop-up shop will include Grace Place stickers, sweatshirts, socks, durags and bonnets. Donations accepted include hand warmers, hoodies, blankets, travel-sized toiletries, toilet paper, snacks and bottled water, and Black hair care items.
